The Healthy Okaloosa initiative uses consistent messaging in multiple settings to reach families where they live, learn, work and play. The Healthy Okaloosa 5210 message promotes 5 more fruits and vegetables daily, limiting recreational screen time to 2 hours, engaging in physical activity for 1 hour and cutting back on sugar sweetened beverages, preferably to 0.

DOH-Okaloosa publicly celebrates organizations which are committed to a Healthy Okaloosa culture, where we all benefit from lower healthcare costs, healthier children and families, and a happy, healthy lifestyle in Okaloosa County! Healthy Okaloosa Childcare recognizes organizations that meet specific center wellness standards, with sustainable policy and environmental strategies that support physical activity, healthy eating, breastfeeding support, and being tobacco free.

In 2019, the Healthy Okaloosa Childcare certification levels were updated. In the past, childcare centers and home-based sites were awarded a level based on their assessment answers. Now the sites will receive a level based on the activities they complete. Below are the new levels:

Silver - 1 Health Promotion Activity and 1 Policy Creation (or have a pre-existing policy)

Gold - 2 Health Promotion Activities, 1 New Policy Creation, and 1 Parent Engagement Activity

Platinum - 3 Health Promotion Activities, 1 New Policy Creation (must be breastfeeding or tobacco-focused) OR Breastfeeding Room, and 1 Parent Engagement Activity

Is your childcare center or home-based site interested in joining? Please complete the Healthy Okaloosa Childcare interest survey by clicking here. A Healthy Okaloosa Childcare team member will be in touch to schedule an in-person meeting.

Please contact the Healthy Okaloosa Childcare team at HealthyOkaloosa@flhealth.gov or 850-344-0668 for more information!

Monthly Newsletters

The Healthy Okaloosa Childcare team develops an e-newsletter each month. The e-newsletter is sent to all program participants and includes information, health tips, and upcoming events. It can be forwarded to your center's parents or staff and posted in public work areas. To sign up for the newsletter, email HealthyOkaloosa@flhealth.gov!

Health Observances

One way to complete health promotion activities at your childcare site is by celebrating health observances! Visit the National Health Observances website to view options. Need assistance? Contact the Healthy Okaloosa Childcare team at HealthyOkaloosa@flhealth.gov!

Additional Awards

Did you know that childcare sites can apply for tobacco and breastfeeding support awards too? Contact the Healthy Okaloosa Childcare team at HealthyOkaloosa@flhealth.gov to start your applications.
